Instructions

Requirements:

Research the given topic in your group and break down the information into parts narrative and visualization to educate the viewers about the issue.

Use questions ‘What, why, where, when, who, and how’ into the building of your narrative before transferring the information onto your storyboard. Use relevant visuals to create associations of information to the infographics. Refer to the chart here to decide how to visualize.

Expected outcomes: An animated infographic informing the audience about a given topic (min 1.5 max 3 min video) Must include some form of data/statistics. Must use the questioning technique and provide answers.

Group 4

1. Delegations
Figure 1.1 Delegations, Week 2
Notes:
Each member's strengths were taken into account while assigning roles and assignments.

2. Data Collection
Figure 1.2 Data Collection, Week 2
Notes:
Each member has to do their own research and discuss which is relevant to include during this time. After multiple discussion, we decided to separate into two teams, Illustration Team and Animation Team as our group lacked another person. Most groups in our class consists of 5 people. Therefore, Amirah and Jennifer were put into Illustration Team as they had more capabilities in that area and I took part into Visual Idea and Animation. The Illustration Team regularly asks for my opinion whether it suits the visual idea and narrative of our script and to ensure both our progress are aligned.

3. Organisation

Progression Pre-Planning

1. Sketches:
Figure 2.1 Sketches, Week 4
Notes:
The sketches were done by Jennifer Huang and Amirah Akbar Ali.

2. Animatics:
Figure 2.2 Part 1: Amirah's Sketches, Compiled by Adrianna, Week 5

Figure 2.3 Part 2: Jennifer's Sketches, Compiled by Jennifer, Week 5
Notes:
After looking into the sketches, we had to create an animatics which comes before the final animation to see whether our duration and script are within 3 minutes. I separated the animatics into two, Part 1 was done by me and initially, Part 2 was supposed to be done by Alan Firgianto. However, there were no responses from him and our progression was already moving on to final illustrations, thus Jennifer had to compile her Part 2 into a video form but without SFX.

3. Spreadsheet:
Figure 2.4 Spreadsheet, Week 1- Week 7
Notes:
We then scheduled the time for every frame. In addition, this organization made it simpler for us to recognize particular elements when animating and drawing.

4. Script:

Figure 2.5 Scriptwriting, Week 5
Notes:
This is the second revision script, our first revision had caused our duration to exceed 5-6 minutes. We decided to change and cut some down but along the way we received an information that our data and statistics has to be from Malaysia and not worldwide. Alan Firgianto had to find a new data and replace that into our script. Other than that, our script before was more focused into the narrative than the information, after consulting with our lecturer we had to revise the script and focus more on the information and how the design should be infographical.

5. Design Style

Figure 2.6 Design Style and Concept, Week 3
Notes:
Our group decided to go with the dark theme style as we are speaking about The Impact of Social Media on Society.

Storyboard:

Figure 2.7 Storyboard, Week 5
Notes:
The storyboard was done by Amirah Akbar Ali and I.

Feedback: Change Color Scheme
Figure 3.1 Feedback after consultation
Notes:
Our lecturer gave comments to our illustrations and found that it was too bright and contrasted. Although we explained our concept he advised that it's better we take soft colors that are not alarming to the eyes. I had written down his comments and posted it into the group:

*FEEDBACK FROM SIR:*
1. Inconsistent typeface (Serious typeface avoid bubbly)
2. Inconsistent font size
3. Include more information (Texts)
4. Topic has to be on top left each scene (photo shown)
5. 0:57 Secs (Before Andrew Frame) Transition first (delay) THEN Include Voice Over (it’s too rushed)
6. Too much colors & typeface (please reshare our new typeface and colors by this weekend)
7. During Andrew’s script (emails, voice mails, etc) always put texts (pop out from the character also can)
8. Evolution: include years

Third time revision of Color Scheme: Part 1 and Part 2 altogether (All Frames)

Progression (Role: Animator), Week 8

Figure 4.1 Compilation of Illustrations from Adobe Illustration

Figure 4.2 Franklin Gothic Type Family
Notes:
Jennifer Huang suggested this typeface throughout the animation process (and her illustrations).

Figure 4.3 Adobe Illustrator, layering
Notes:
Due to a lack of hands and time, the illustrations were completely done at the end of week 7 which led me to have limited time with the animation. We had a total of 78 frames, the progression for layering each element for each file was very time-consuming and caused a lot of storage for my laptop.

Figure 4.4 After Effects
Notes:
I had multiple breakdowns with using After Effects because it is a very heavy application, almost every file saved crashed at the end and caused my works to be missing afterwards. My laptop RAM were limited and I had to resort to using other people's laptop and purchasing hard drives to ensure they are all saved.

Final Outcome

Feedback

Week 1: Create slides with group members
Week 2: Research in advance with the chosen topic
Week 4: Japan Trip (Group members in Malaysia can consult for further advise)
Week 3: Prepare storyboards and character designs.
Week 5: Character and storyboard idea proposal was approved. Emphasized simplicity and informativeness. Record a clear voiceover.
Week 6: Change the colour palette to incorporate softer, pastel tones. Refrain from employing numerous colour variations. Switch to a more formal typeface.
Week 7: The new colour scheme is good  and typeface. Complete the animation.

Reflection

Experience: My experience throughout this project was rocky at first, as short semesters are usually very rushed and chaotic but with supportive group members by my side it helped ease that situation. Overall, I learned a lot from each week and as a group leader, I was glad that I had ensured every week I set a deadline to keep everyone on top of their progress and they were all compliant to that. Although the biggest obstacle I went through is the multiple times of After Effects crashed which resulted more time to redo and it did not let me explore more ways to aninate which made me feel unsatisfied with the result.

Observation: I came to recognize the importance of seeking consultations, particularly from our lecturer, his perspectives often differed from ours. These consultations led to multiple improvements in our work.

Findings: Practice is key. I learned animation techniques from various platforms like Pinterest and YouTube. While I found animation enjoyable, I realized it's not my main interest. Nonetheless, I'm glad for the experience and eager to continue learning.
