Create a font that is intended to solve a larger problem or meant to be part of a solution in the area of your interest be it graphic design, animation, new media or entertainment design or any other related area not necessarily reflecting your specialisation. End result: a complete generated font (.ttf) with applications.
Advanced Typography - Final Project
I decided to explore Museums and Galleries because I've always been intrigued by how designers arrange exhibits and employ signage, boards, and other elements to draw people to a museum. Consequently, I conducted research to identify the museum in Malaysia that captured my interest the most, and it turned out to be the Bank Negara Malaysia's museum.

Figure 1.2 Visual Research on Banknotes and Museums
Notes:
I started researching on Banknotes and Art galleries, it's interesting to look at the modernised banknotes as Malaysia's ringgit has a traditional Iranian touch to it.
Figure 1.3 Site Visit to Bank Negara Malaysia Museum
Notes:
On the 15th of October 2023, I paid a visit to the Bank Negara Malaysia, prompted by a lack of information available online and the institution's clear preference for data security. With few online resources, I felt compelled to conduct a hands-on exploration of the museum. What awaited me surpassed my expectations, as the contemporary nature of the building sharply contrasted with the preconceived belief I held, anticipating a more conventional and possibly old-fashioned charm.

Figure 2.0 Progression of Uppercase Letters
Notes:
The first attempt was merely a try-and-error process. I struggled the most in creating "S" because it requires curvature and I had a lack of understanding of the structural balance for "S". Mr.Vinod had told me that they are not symmetrical for the the upper and bottom of "S".
Figure 2.1 Third Attempt Progression of Uppercase Letters
Notes:
After the third attempt, I had understood the consistency of weight strokes, the body (stems) and the height of uppercase letters for each of them can vary with their width. However, I encountered a problem in P and R due to wanting to make them look tall but it was not consistent with other letterforms.

Figure 2.3 Webdings
Notes:
I had extracted the icons and elements from the old Ringgit Malaysia (referring to the site visit figure 1.3) Mr.Vinod had suggested if I would like to try creating weddings for my lowercase, although I was quarterly there it took a lot of time to get the details and I struggled throughout the journey. I didn't want to waste my time, therefore I had to go back to making normal lowercase letters even when I was running out of time.
Figure 2.4 Progression of Lowercase Letters
Notes:
Initially, I had made the stems for the lowercase letters the same height as the uppercase and it looked awkward, therefore I had to revisit the issue that I overlooked. I realised the uppercase were too wide compared to my lowercase and had to resize them. The second attempt was after revisiting my uppercase letters, I had adjusted the stem stroke to be thicker and not thin as before.

Figure 2.5 Progression of Numerals
Notes:
The numerals took quite awhile but it is obvious from the second attempt my "6" and "9" does
not seem consistent with other numbers as the strokes are not align with other numerals.
Figure 2.6 Progression of Punctuations
Notes:
The creation of ampersand "&" was very difficult and styling its stroke took a lot of effort compared to the others.

Feedback
Week 14:
Specific Feedback: Finish everything from Uppercase, Lowercase, Numerals and Punctuations.
Week 13:
General Feedback: Do not place the uppercase letters and lowercase side by side.
Specific Feedback: Use a good application for the last task. I had showed the banknote design that I was working on
Week 12:
Specific Feedback: Continue to finish punctuations, numerals and lowercase letters.
Week 11:
Specific Feedback: Consultation on the uppercase letters, I had to ensure the weight of the strokes are consistent and avoid making the same mistakes as week 10.
Week 10:
Specific Feedback: Mr.Vinod had advised to experiment on Webdings and continue to finish my uppercase letters. My uppercase letters had too much elements that it caused to look all over the place, he asked me to remove them.
Week 9:
Specific Feedback: Chosen research was approved by Mr.Vinod. The Bank Negara Malaysia, he advised to start the research.
Reflection
Experience: This task proved to be challenging, especially for people who may struggle with time management. It demanded a strenuous effort of consistent practice, and despite the considerable time investment, I successfully completed the assignments within the designated timeframe.
Observation :Exploring the intricacies of this task was a fascinating journey. I had to grasp the significance of weight strokes, particularly in dealing with curved elements such as S, G, C, Y, and J. Measuring these curves posed a unique difficulty, and ensuring their consistency with other letters added an additional layer of complexity. During this process, I faced personal challenges with health that disrupted my studies, making it difficult to maintain focus on such a meticulous endeavor.
Findings: I found it intriguing how typefaces can be influenced by the nuanced interplay of curves, strokes, and weights. The task highlighted the importance of precision and attention to detail in typography. Typeface design is not merely a visual art form but also a discipline that demands a thorough understanding of letterforms and their harmonious integration. Through this experience, I gained a deeper appreciation for the meticulous craftsmanship required to create visually cohesive and aesthetically pleasing typefaces.
