Lessons:

Week 9
In our final assignment, Mr. Hafiz tasked us with creating a triptych and an animated page. As part of the assignment, he provided examples demonstrating the creation of light and shadow using the Chiaroscuro method. To practice this technique, we worked on depicting a man and a pear as subjects.

Week 10
On week 10, we learnt ornaments or creating patterns with drawing modes and width tool.

Chosen Story:

"The Island of the Fay" from my understanding:

The narrative begins with the narrator travelling across an idyllic landscape when he comes to an amazing island covered in vegetation lush. He finds an exquisite woman, a Fay, admiring her surroundings as he approaches the island. Her ethereal beauty and the beautiful ambience of the island attract the narrator.

The Fay's traits and behaviour, pondering on their delicate and secretive nature. He highlights their ability to move elegantly and quietly, blending in with the natural landscape. The Fay live in a domain of pure beauty, free of the defects and blemishes that plague the human world.

As the narrator digs deeper into his observations, he muses on the relationship between art and nature. He mulls on the idea that the Fay are the embodiment of aesthetic perfection, living in harmony with their natural surroundings. The author is astounded by their ability to produce live pieces of art simply by existing.

A startling noise, an intrusion from the outer world, interrupts the narrator's thoughts. The island's serene serenity is disrupted when the Fay scatter, vanishing into the surrounding terrain. The author is alone, contemplating the fleeting and fragile nature of beauty and the unavoidable intrusion of reality.

"The Island of the Fay" reflects on the beauty and fleeting nature of art and nature. The concept of an idealised universe exists apart from reality's faults. Considers the transitory aspect of beauty and the human urge to record and preserve it through the lens of the Fay. The story is a meditation on the delicate balance between the ideal and the flawed, as well as the transient moments of harmony we may discover in nature.

Digitisation

In the digitisation process, I began constructing the main and big elements such as the mountains:

Figure 3.1 Digitisation Development
Notes:
I started off with the structure of the island, I used the pen tool and made sharp edges for the mountain and build a balance height for each mountain that is on the circular island.

Figure 3.2 Digitisation Development

Figure 3.3 Finalised Look
Notes:
The concept for this triptych revolves around a perspective from the ocean, resulting in minimal depiction of water waves within the frames. However, upon further reflection, I realized that since the narrative is from the viewpoint of the narrator, it was essential to incorporate their presence in the artwork.

Consequently, I positioned a boat and the narrator themselves at the corner of the triptych, symbolizing the beginning of the storyline where the narrator envisions this captivating island. To enhance the surreal and majestic quality of the island, I found the inclusion of clouds to be of utmost importance. They serve a crucial role in creating an atmosphere of grandeur and otherworldliness, infusing the scene with a misty, ethereal appearance. The clouds provide a veil of foggy steam, contributing to the overall idyllic and unreal ambiance that characterizes the island.

Figure 3.1 Triptych with Key Texts
Notes:
The fay at the second page existed to align with the narrator’s approach of the idyllic fay that looked like a fairy/angel. I really struggle to create the character and in my opinion, it does not look angelic at all, however I must include her to align with the story.

On the last triptych, there are somewhat like an explosive, smoke visible to show the interruption of the noise and had caused the island to disrupt and fade away, destroyed and damaged, flawed

Reflection

Our recent assignment was quite exciting, and even though we had the freedom to pick the story we wanted to illustrate, I took the opportunity to study how to create a story-poster effectively. This involved learning about the essential elements required and mastering the use of tools to incorporate effects like shadows, gradients, and sliced shapes. However, I still feel that I have a lot to learn in the field of illustration. Specifically, I need to improve my understanding of achieving the right balance in composition, colors, and sizes.
